Gig Review: Rival State – 10th July 2015 – The Duchess, York

Rival State are supported by Us Amongst The Rest and Your Illuminations. Both support bands do a great job of creating an atmosphere in the audience, particularly Your Illuminations with their extravagant opening and endless energy throughout their set, which is so contagious I was smiling throughout the whole performance.

Rival State are a Grunge-Rock band from New Plymouth in New Zealand, but now live in London to make music and tour the UK. Tonight they are playing songs from their newest EP Gutter Mouth, which is a hit with the audience. Luke Van Hoof creates an absolute storm on stage (and is a great vocalist and front man), while the rest of the band concentrate on making the music as awesome as it is. You can tell by the way they play and the way they portray themselves on the stage they truly love what they do.

It is quite an intimate gig with the majority of the audience being committed followers of the bands. I assume that this is due to the gig being far from where headliners Rival State are based, as the gig itself is an absolute cracker and I feel sorry for the rest of the world that missed this one.

I will be keeping an eye out for Rival State being up North again, and so should the rest of you.

You can purchase Rival State’s EP from iTunes.
